Theory Test

The multiple choice questions are done using a touch screen computer and the hazard perception clips use a mouse button to record your responses.

You have to pass both parts to gain a pass certificate. If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole test, and will need to take both parts again.

Preparing for the theory test

The driving theory test is broken up into two parts:

  • multiple-choice questions
  • hazard perception

The multiple choice

To prepare for the multiple-choice part of the theory test you should use three books known as the 'source material'. They are:

  • The Highway Code
  • know your traffic signs
  • the relevant book from the 'essential skills' range
Highway Code
Highway Code
Highway Code Online

The Highway Code applies to England, Scotland and Wales. The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone.

Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison.

Knowing and applying the rules contained in The Highway Code could significantly reduce road casualties.

Know your traffic signs
Know your traffic signs
Know your traffic signs Online

Traffic signs play a vital role in directing, informing and controlling road users' behaviour. This is to make the roads as safe as possible for everyone. It makes a knowledge of traffic signs vital.

There are three basic types of traffic sign - signs that give orders, signs that warn and signs that give information. Each type has a different shape. A further guide to the function of a sign is its colour.

The essential skills
Essential Skills

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) produces books in the essential skills range. The books give you everything you need to learn about and maintain safe driving or riding skills for life.

You can buy them from most high street book shops. They are also available to order online or over the phone from The Stationery Office.

Before you start the test you will given instructions on how the test works.

You can choose to have a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.

The question and several possible answers options will appear onscreen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions may require more than one answer.

Some multiple choice questions will be given as a case study. The case study will show a scenario that five questions will be based on. The subject of the scenario focuses on real life examples and experiences that drivers could come across when driving.

You can 'flag' questions that you want to come back to later in the test. At the end of the multiple choice you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception starts.

hazard perception

Hazard perception

Before you start the hazard perception you will be shown a short video clip about how the hazard perception works.

The hazard perception clips are viewed on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You will have 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.

To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.

You can't review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you'll only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.

At the end of the test

At the end of the hazard perception test you will be asked to answer a number of customer survey questions. Please take a moment to answer them, DO NOT allow the test centre staff to put you off.

You don't have to answer the questions if you don't want to, and any information given is anonymous and confidential. The survey questions don't affect the result of the test.

When you have finished the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you'll not be allowed to enter it again. You'll then be given your result by the test centre staff.

The driving test is designed for you to show you know and understand the Highway Code and the theory of driving safely. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises.

Highway Code Online.

The driving test has been designed to see if you:

  • Can drive safely in various traffic conditions.
  • Know The Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving.

Taking someone with you on your driving test

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) encourages you to take someone with you on your driving test. This will normally be the person who has taught you, but it could be a relative or a friend, and must be over 16 years old. They cannot take any part in the test, verbally or physically. If your examiner feels they are helping you in someway, then the test will be terminated.

The person who goes with you will be able to see how you perform during the test. To get the most benefit from this, it would be sensible to ask your instructor to go with you. They can then give you advice on how to improve your driving, whether you pass or fail.

Eyesight check

eyetest
Eye Test

The test will include an eyesight check. If you fail this, your test will be terminated. The eyesight test requires you to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 meters using the old style number plate, or 20 meters using the new style number plate.

If you can't speak English or have difficulty reading, you may copy down what you see.

Vehicle safety questions

vehicle safety checks
Vehicle Safety Checks
pdf version

After your eyesight check you will be asked two vehicle safety questions. These are basic safety checks that as driver you should carry out weekly to ensure your vehicle is safe to use.

You maybe asked to open the bonnet to identify where fluid levels would be checked, you will not be asked to touch a hot engine or physically check fluid levels.

You will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me'. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one driving fault being recorded.

Driving ability

You will be examined on your general driving and on one reversing exercise, This will be chosen from:

  • reversing around a corner
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking on the road
  • revese parking into a bay

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

During the driving test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and will include a range of typical road and traffic conditions.

Throughout the test you should drive in the way your instructor has taught you. If you make a mistake, don't worry about it as it might be a less serious driving fault and may not affect your result. However, if at any time your examiner considers your driving to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.

Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

After the practical test

At the end of your test, you can call your instructor over, if he didn't go with you on your test, this is so he can listen to the result and feedback with you.

The examiner will tell you whether you passed or failed and will explain how you did during the test.

If you pass...

If you pass and have a photocard driving licence issued after 1 March 2004 the examiner will ask you if you want your full driving licence issued to you automatically. The examiner will take your old licence off you. You will then be given a pass certificate to prove you passed your test. DVLA will then send you your new full licence by post within four weeks of you passing your practical test.

If you fail...

If you fail the test the examiner will give you some feedback to help prepare yourself for your next test. Your driving report form will also show you where you made any mistakes. You can take another practical test 10 working days after your test.

Independent Driving

independent driving
Independent Driving

Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. It's not a test of your orientation and navigation skills.

Independent driving explained

independent drive
independent Drive

During your test you'll have to drive independently by either following:

  • traffic signs
  • a series of directions
  • a combination of both

To help you understand where you are going when following verbal directions, the examiner will show you a diagram.

It doesn't matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced drivers.

Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions - this includes deciding when it's safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you're going.

The independent driving route

If you ask for a reminder of the directions, the examiner will confirm them to you.

If you go off the independent driving route it won't affect the result of your test unless you commit a driving fault.

If you go off the route or take a wrong turning, the examiner will help you to get back on the route. You can then continue with the independent driving.

If there are poor or obscured traffic signs, the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next traffic sign - you won't need to have a detailed knowledge of the area.

You can't use a sat nav for independent driving as it gives you turn-by-turn prompts. Independent driving tests how you make your own decisions.

Pass Plus

pass plus
Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a training course aimed at new drivers. It was designed by the DSA with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.

New drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing their test, due to lack of driving experience. Pass Plus builds on your skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, to help you become a more confident driver.

Who can do Pass Plus training

You can take a Pass Plus course at any time, but it’s mainly aimed at new drivers in the first year after passing their test.

Pass Plus modules

Pass Plus consists of six modules:

  • driving in town
  • driving in all weathers
  • driving on rural roads
  • driving at night
  • driving on dual carriageways
  • driving on motorways

The cost of a Pass Plus course

Pass Plus Cymru

In Wales your Pass Plus course will be funded by your local authority, via Pass Plus Cymru. The cost of the course is £20.

You will be required to attend an evening session lasting approx 3 hours, you will see presentations by the Fire Brigade and the Ambulance Service. You will then be allocated a Driving Instructor, who will be responsilbe for the driving session of the Pass Plus, this will last at least six hours, though it can take longer if your instructor thinks its necessary.

How you'll be instructed

At the start of your course you will be given a copy of the 'Pass Plus Pupil's Guide'. This contains detailed information about all aspects of Pass Plus.

Pass Plus is a practical course and all modules should be practical sessions. However, local conditions and time of year may mean that some modules need to be given as a theory session. Generally at least five and a half out of six hours should be spent in the car.

You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed during the modules.

Your instructor will complete a training report form that you’ll sign and date when you reach the required standard in each module. To pass the course you'll need to reach a satisfactory standard in all the course modules. You’ll be given a progress record to help you to keep track of your progress throughout the course.

At the end of your training

On successfully completing your training you'll be sent your Pass Plus certificate to claim your discount on your car insurance policy. You should also consider working towards your Advanced Driving Test. Passing this test would take your driving skills to a higher level, and provide you with further financial benefits.

The DSA advises you to check for available discounts offered by insurance companies to drivers who have completed their Pass Plus course. The amount you can save will depend on the insurance company you choose. Insurers who support Pass Plus offer discounts on the three main types of motor insurance cover:

  • comprehensive
  • third party, fire and theft
  • third party only

If you do not have a car, you may be able to defer the discount for up to two years, but you would need to check with your insurance company. If you passed your practical driving test more than a year ago, check that you will be eligible for the discount on offer from your insurance company before you take the course.

Check which company offers you the best discount. You could save more money on your insurance than you actually paid for your Pass Plus course, effectively getting your training for nothing. When you contact the insurers, you need to check that a Pass Plus discount is available to you.

The following insurers offer motor insurance benefits to car drivers who have passed Pass Plus:

Testimonials

Jen McDonald

Steve is an excellent instructor!

I was so nervous about learning to drive and could never get round to arranging my lessons, so my boyfriend had to buy a voucher for me from Steve.

On my first lesson I was really nervous but Steve was great and put me at ease. I started learning to drive in March and had passed my test in 3 months!

I will be recommending Steve to all my friends.

Amir Movahedi

I was recommended to Steve by a friend and it was the best recommendation that anyone has given me.

He knows exactly what he’s doing in every part of the driving (for example, all the manuvoures, the driving, the mirror checking, indicating, the test routes etc..).

Steve’s a great guy, not only does he teach you at a very high level but at the same time he’s like a friend, cracking the odd joke every now and then.

I have now applied to do my Passplus course with Steve.

I will and have recommended anyone to drive with Steve - Absolute Legend!

Please take a few minutes to read these terms and conditions.

The following terms and conditions represent the basis upon which your Driving Instructor offers driving lessons and courses to you. The Driving Instructor is Self Employed and agrees to be bound by the following terms and conditions.

All Driving Instructors are bound by a professional code of conduct. Your Instructor will be courteous, polite, tidy and punctual. The car will be well maintained, clean and tidy. All cars used will be fitted with dual controls. The cars are fully insured for driving tuition. Instructors will NOT smoke in the car while giving tuition, nor will they use your lesson time for any other form of business, personal or otherwise.

The learner must hold a current, valid Driving Licence (Provisional or Full), which must be produced on or in advance of their fist lesson. The learner must also check that they can read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (i.e. 67 feet, about 5 car lengths) with glasses/contact lenses if normally worn.

PAYMENTS

NOTE:-The fee paid to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) for your driving test DOES NOT pay for the use of the car while you are taking your test.

Credit facilities are not available for lessons. Payment may be made at the beginning of each lesson with cash, cheque (with guarantee card) or vouchers issued by the instructor, unless other arrangements have been made or you have paid for your lessons in advance.

Normally you will take the test in the driving school car. As you have a lesson immediately before the test you should be aware that the charge on the day of your test will be the equivalent of a double lesson fee (a lesson PLUS a 1 hour car hire).

As part of our service we will, if you so wish, book your test, on your behalf. No charge will be made for this service. All you will be asked to do is pay the current test fee to your instructor who will then book your test.

Pupils should note that, should they undertake their own test booking, there is NO guarantee that the car & instructor will be available for the requested time.

CANCELLATIONS & PUNCTUALITY

You must give a minimum 24 hours notice to cancel or change a lesson. Failure to give this notice will result in you being charged for the lesson. Failure to show up for a lesson at the agreed time will also result in you being charged for the lesson.

Should your instructor cancel or change a lesson giving you less than 24 hours notice you will be offered a new appointment time. In some circumstances this new appointment will be free of charge to compensate for short notice, however, your Instructor reserves the right to postpone lessons if it is felt that the weather or road conditions are unsuitable or dangerous. Your Instructor cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred as a result of having to postpone any lessons for these reasons. Should the DSA cancel your driving test at short notice, your instructor cannot be held responsible for costs incurred as a result.

In their own interests learners are advised to be punctual for their lesson appointments. Your instructor would normally wait for a maximum of 10 minutes before the lesson would be abandoned and the lesson fee forfeited or become due for payment. A reciprocal waiting time may become necessary if your Instructor is delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. Any lesson time lost as a result of this would be made up by your Instructor, either at the end of the normal lesson time if possible, or at a later date.

LEARNER COMFORT & SAFETY

In the interests of comfort and safety learners are advised to wear suitable footwear and clothing, which does not restrict movement. Learners must also take note of any medication they are taking that may affect their ability to drive safely and advise their instructor accordingly before taking any lesson booked.

If your instructor suspects you are not fit to drive through taking any medication, (prescribed or not), the lesson will be cancelled/terminated and the fee will become forfeited/charged. If you are in any doubt, bring your medication carton/container with you to your lesson, to show your instructor, thus pre-empting any problems.

Pupils must make sure that their mobile phones are switched off for the duration of the lesson. Whilst we have a mobile phone, in car at all times, we will NOT make outgoing calls, or send text messages during the course of your lesson.

You will be returned to the place where your lesson commenced unless you have made prior arrangements with your instructor.

Our Policy on taking the Driving Test

From time to time we are asked to present, for test, someone who is, in our opinion, not ready to take the test. Our response will follow one of the two courses outlined below.

We will always, in the first instance, endeavour to persuade the pupil (or parent/guardian that their son/daughter) should not, as yet, be taking the test, and that the test itself should be postponed until a later date.

Where there is an insistence that the test will be taken we will refuse the use of the driving school car for that test. This means that the test will have to be taken under your own auspices (i.e. your own car).

The DSA take a very dim view of instructors who present, for test, a candidate who is clearly not ready for that test.

In either case we will give sufficient notice/advice of this so that no financial loss, in the form of a forfeited test fee, will occur.

Being accompanied in the car.

You will NOT normally be accompanied whilst you are on a lesson or a test EXCEPT in the following circumstances:-

  • You are of course, welcome to have a parent/guardian present during a lesson so that they may determine your progress.
  • From time to time you may be accompanied by a DSA Supervisor for the purposes of your instructor's tuition standards being tested. This is for your longer term benefit, and your co-operation in this regard will be appreciated.
  • Your test examiner may be supervised by his superior. You will be advised of this at the start of your test, though you MAY NOT refuse the supervisor accompanying you.
  • Your instructor, at your discretion, may accompany you on test. It is YOUR decision as to whether they do so.
